November Spotlight: Kenya Ndaroini

This November we’re proud to spotlight a remarkable single-origin coffee: Kenya Ndaroini. Sourced from the chilly, high-altitude slopes of Mt. Kenya near Karatina, this washed lot hails from the Ndaroini Factory in Nyeri at around 1,700 m above sea level.

Origin & Process

The cherries are hand-picked when fully ripe and then pulped, fermented for 24 hours, and dried on raised beds for 14-21 days. This careful process helps bring clarity and sweetness to the cup. Kenyan coffees like this one are known for their dynamic acidity, expressive flavor profiles and lifted clarity.

Tasting Notes

When we cupped this lot here at Vienna Coffee Company the standout flavors we found were crisp cranberry, peach and cinnamon.

Here’s a breakdown of how those notes reveal themselves:

  • Cranberry – A vivid, bright red-fruit acidity comes through early in the sip, giving the cup energy and liveliness.

  • Peach – Beneath the brightness lies a gentle, juicy stone-fruit sweetness, rounding the cup with elegance.

  • Cinnamon – The finish brings a subtle spice warmth that lingers, adding depth and a cozy autumnal character.

These notes marry beautifully with the coffee’s light-to-medium body and really shine whether brewed as a filter pour or served as a highlight on our espresso bar.

Why It’s Perfect for November

As autumn deepens and mornings carry a chill our way in East Tennessee, this Kenya Ndaroini is a perfect match. The bright cranberry acidity lifts you out of the fog of early morning while the peach note offers softness and the cinnamon finish nods to the seasonal shift. It’s a coffee that bridges the crisp freshness of fall with the warmth we look forward to as the year edges toward winter.

How to Enjoy It

Here are a few serving suggestions to get the most out of this coffee:

  • Filter Brew (Hario V60, Chemex) – Use 1 g coffee to ~16 g water, medium-fine grind. Aim for ~3:30-4:00 brew time. You’ll reveal the crisp acidity and delicate stone-fruit sweetness best.

  • Espresso – A single/double shot (≈18-20 g in, 36-40 g out) at 94°C, ~25-30 seconds. The cinnamon spice note comes forward nicely here, especially when paired with milk.

  • Coffee + Milk – Try it as a flat white or latte to soften the brightness while still enjoying the unique fruit and spice character.

  • Pastry Pairing – Try pairing it with a tart cranberry-almond pastry or a Sunrise muffin in the cafe to mirror and enhance the flavor notes in the cup.
