March 2026 Spotlight - Kenya Muinami

Welcome to the March 2026 edition of For The Love of Coffee, a blog about all things coffee exclusively for the employees of Vienna Coffee.

This month’s featured Spotlight shines brightly on a true African gem, the deeply flavourful and satisfying Kenya Muinami (pronounced moo-e-NAH-me). Kenyan coffee is known globally for its quality and complex profile. Often called the “wine of coffee”, Kenyan coffees typically present a bright acidity and a fruit-forward profile, and often feature classic tasting notes such as dark fruits, citrus, and brown sugar.

Coffee farmer Stephen Nandela is the regional evangelist for specialty coffee in the Western Rift Valley of Kenya. In just a few years, he's gone from starting specialty processing, to creating amazing microlots for export to convincing many of his neighbors and friends to get started in

We began working with Stephen in 2023, drawn to his thoughtful approach to farming, processing, and continual improvement. When the Deeper Roots team visited Stephen's farm in 2024, it was clear to all that he is going to be a great partner for years to come.

Stephens farm is located in an area called Cherengany Hills—part of the Mt. Elgon mountain range, but with a particularly cold micro-climate. Stephen and his wife Lilian named the farm Nawiri, which means prosperity, but everyone calls it ‘Muinami’, which means ‘Bent’ or ‘those who work’ in Kikuyu.

At Muinami, quality starts long before harvest. Stephen places a strong emphasis on selective picking, fermentation control, and precise drying, ensuring each lot is given the time and attention it needs.

We have received this exceptional coffee here at our Vienna Roastery, where our awesome roasting team utilizes a medium roast profile to bring out the full range of flavors inherent in the coffee. Below are a few quick facts about the coffee for you to have on hand:

  • Producer - Stephen Nendela

  • Region - Kitale

  • Cultivar - Ruiru

  • Processing - washed

  • Altitude - 1900m

  • Tasting notes - Apple, Brown Spice, Citrus

  • Body - Full

I hope you all have a FANTASTIC month, and as always, THANK YOU to each of you for making Vienna such a welcoming and special place.

Peace, Love, and Coffee.

Matt
