Interesting Coffee Fact: Ceylon

Interesting Coffee fact for this week...

In 1886 coffee rust infects the coffee of Ceylon (now Sri Lanka), devastating hundreds of thousands of acres of trees. Tea is planted instead, helping to turn Britain into a tea-drinking nation. Coffee leaf rust is spread by wind and rain from spores from lesions on the underside of the plant (Mitchell, 84).

Interesting Coffee Fact

Did you know??

Haitian coffee farmers are resurrecting the nation's coffee sector, emphasizing sustainable shade-grown methods. In the eighteenth century Haiti supplied half the world's coffee from its brutal slave plantation system. The Haitian revolution which began in 1795 destroyed both French colonial rule and the coffee industry, clearing the way for Brazil to emerge as the world's leading exporter.
