Behind the Beans: Guatemala La Armonia Hermosa

THE FARM:
Nestled high along a fertile volcano, overlooking the Antigua Valley, Santa Maria de Jesus is an idyllic home to the finest Guatemalan coffee. The small, family farmers of this village have historically struggled to make a living growing this high quality coffee. Now with La Armonia Hermosa, things are different. Farmers receive higher prices through increased quality, marketability and relationship to their buyers. By enjoying the fruit of their labors you are giving them new opportunities, a renewed sense of community pride and a chance for economic sustainability.

THE FARMER: JULIO CUY XAR:
Julio is a family man that runs La Armonia Hermosa (the beautiful harmony) and pastors a local church. Through relationship coffee buying and fair wages, Julio was able to build his family a new home in his community.

THE COFFEE:
This coffee grows at 1500-2000 masl (meters above sea level) and is fully washed, meaning the entirety of the fruit is washed off and removed before drying the seed. Through relationship coffee buying and education, Julio’s farm and coffee mill has been able to update their systems frequently and the quality of the coffee gets better and better each year. Once we get a hold of the beans, we lightly roast them in small batches to pull out notes of plum, cherry, and chocolate. This coffee makes for a clean, slightly sweet, tart, and juicy cup.
